Did you know that 7.3% of all violent crimes occur in parking lots and garages? That may not seem like a huge proportion, but it’s significant. This means we could all use a brush-up on parking lot safety!
While some situations are unavoidable, there are many ways you can prevent unsafe encounters while you’re in a parking lot.
Parking Lot Safety Tips
Rule #1 in parking lot safety is choosing the right place to park. When you choose where to park, avoid parking next to large trucks blocking your vision and other people’s ability to see you. If you come out to your vehicle and a van is parked next to your driver-side door, enter the car from the passenger side instead—it’s better to be safe than sorry. Avoid Distractions
When you’re getting in and out of your car, focus on your surroundings, instead of your smartphone. Predators tend to look for victims who look distracted since they can catch you off-guard easily.
Also, have your keys in your hand before you enter the parking lot. This way, you aren’t distracted and digging for them. Some people will also take a photo of where their vehicle is parked so they’re not walking around the lot looking for it.
Check Your Back Seat
There have been cases of people hiding in the backseats of their victims to get easy access and sneak up on them. Before you get into your car, take a peek in your back seat. If you see someone in there, leave immediately, go to a populated area, and call 911.
Lock Your Doors
When you get in your car, lock your doors immediately and get ready to drive off. Do not sit and look at your phone, just go. The longer you loiter, the more of a chance that trouble will find you.
Also, be sure not to leave expensive items, money, or even designer sunglasses where people can see them in your vehicle. These items may motivate someone to break into your vehicle!
Carry a Safety Device in a Parking Lot
Consider carrying a personal alarm (legal everywhere) or pepper spray, a baton, or a short-bladed knife (check the laws in your area). Some people have been carrying everyday items that are not weapons but can be used as such due to the strict laws in their area (I am writing from Canada). Examples are: hairspray, nail scissors, a tactical flashlight, or car parts in your trunk. We are not saying this is the right way to ensure parking lot safety, but if you choose to do so, this is your decision.
Use Your Car Alarm
If you notice someone following you or see someone around your car, run away from the area and press the alarm button on your key fob. The alarm will scare the perp away! Another option is to carry a personal alarm or safety device.
Walk to Your Car With Others
If you are in an area where you feel unsafe, or the parking lot is not well-lit, it is never a bad idea to ask someone you trust to walk you to your car. Some buildings have security cameras in the parking lots, so you can also ask them to watch the camera to ensure you get in your car safely.
Don’t Worry About “Being Nice”
Throughout life, people constantly tell us to “be nice”. Unfortunately, people sometimes will take advantage of kindness. So when we help others, we have to be careful.
Grown men usually do not need help from women or children. If someone approaches you for help, be aware. If something doesn’t feel right, keep walking. Regardless of gender, be careful when helping a stranger. Men have been and can be victims of violent crime and being alone with a stranger can increase your risk of becoming a statistic.
Ted Bundy faked injuries and even used a cane to trick women into letting down their guard. Then he would rape and murder them in cold blood. He used their goodwill and kindness against them.
If someone is having car trouble, offer to call a tow truck for them. We would not recommend giving a stranger your cell phone, as they can just run off with it. Call for them and put it on speakerphone. If they are in danger, call 911 as soon as you get to a safe, well-lit area.

Personal safety in parking lots is similar to personal safety in general. Your eyes are the best tool in your arsenal, and being aware of your surroundings is the best way to prevent an attack.
If you keep your eyes peeled for problems, stay focused on your safety, and lock your vehicle doors, you will most likely be able to deter someone from making you a victim.
